Limerick-born JJ Hartigan, AKA DJ JJ, is taking part in Movember this month to raise awareness for cancer and mental health and suicide prevention for men.

JJ Hartigan is a broadcaster and social media manager for RTÉ 2FM Radio and also the music director for House Limerick. JJ is using his voice to spread awareness and raise funds for men’s health through his social media channels.

Movember is a leading charity that is changing the face of men’s health. From a humble beginning, the Movember movement has grown into a truly global one. Movember has made epic progress in men’s health, they credit this to the five million people who have raised money with them since 2003.

There are many ways you can take part in Movember. You can take part by growing a moustache without shaving at all for the whole month of November, this is a common way for men to raise money for Movember, and everyone has a lot of fun watching their progress while they try to grow out their beards.

You can also Move for Movember where you run or walk 60km over the month. That 60km is to represent the 60 men that we lose to suicide each hour everywhere around the world.

You can host a Mo-ment by rallying your crew together and doing something fun and easy, virtual or in person, or Mo Your Own Way whether that be a gruelling test of physical endurance or a not-so-sweaty pledge to kick a bad habit. Whether it’s a day, over several weeks, or across the whole year.

JJ took on Movember this year where he will be attempting to grow a moustache over the month of November so he can raise awareness for prostate cancer and mental health and suicide prevention for men.

JJ’s motivation to take part in Movember this year comes from the loss of his father, James Hartigan, a well-known singer and soccer referee in Limerick. JJ’s father passed away due to cancer 13 years ago when JJ was only 22 years old.

JJ explains his motivation for taking part in Movember, saying, “I lost my Dad to cancer thirteen years ago. He was my hero. I’ve never really spoken about the details of his death in private, let alone in public. I watched him deteriorate rapidly in front of my eyes in Milford Hospice and I was lucky enough to be holding him as he passed away. Something that will stay with me forever. I’ve always had questions about cancer since then and I guess I see Movember as a way for me to use my voice to raise awareness about cancer and men’s mental health too. Since signing up to Movember, I’ve managed to raise over €1200 already. I’m absolutely blown away by people’s kindness and generosity. If me looking silly with a moustache makes one person check themselves or start a conversation about how they’re feeling, it will be a step in the right direction”

We at I Love Limerick wish JJ’s well on his moustache journey for Movember!
