Limerick Civic Trust Autumn Lecture Series presents Jodie Ginsberg

The Limerick Civic Trust is delighted to be bringing back its Autumn Lecture Series this September which will take place in the unique setting of St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick.

The events are in conjunction with the Kemmy Business School, Limerick Institute of Technology, Limerick City and County Council and The Irish Examiner. It is a six-part series of public lectures to be delivered by internationally renowned commentators and thought-leaders in their field.

The six-part series of public lectures will examine many topical issues like the impact of Brexit, immigration, integration in multicultural societies, censorship and lots more.

This Thursday, September 28th the speaker is Jodie Ginsberg and the moderator is Patrick Comerford. Jodie will be speaking about, “How censorship stifles debate and undermines the tenets of free and democratic societies.”

Ginsberg will speak about how censorship stifles debate and undermines the tenets of free and democratic societies on 28th September in St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick.  She will consider an apparent shift away from the liberal values that underpin modern democracies in recent years as concerns about safety and security trump those of individual freedom and liberty. And will also comment on press freedom particularly in relation to Trump’s smearing of the media.

Jodie is Chief Executive of Index on Censorship, an international non-profit organisation that publishes work by censored writers and artists and campaigns for free expression worldwide. A former foreign correspondent and business journalist, Jodie worked for more than a decade for Reuters news agency in South Africa and Ireland and as Reuters’ Bureau Chief in London. In 2012, Jodie set up the Reuters ‘press gang’ initiative – a journalism workshop for young people in the communities around Canary Wharf. Jodie has also worked as Head of Communications for Camfed, an education charity that supports girls and young women in Africa through education and at think tank Demos.

Other speakers in the series include; chair of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri, Jodie Ginsburg, CEO of Index on Censorship, Irish Times columnist Simon Carswell, international architect Ian Ritchie and international property develop Roger Madelin.

The lectures will run on Thursday evenings until October 19 in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Lectures start at 8pm and admission is €12 or concessions €8 per lecture.

Proceeds from the series will be used by the Limerick Civic Trust for the restoration of St. Munchin’s Church in the heart of King’s Island.
