‘Significant milestone’ for Limerick’s Joe Duggan with recent sculpture in central London
Limerick native, Joe Duggan unveils his work ‘Echo’, making him the first artist to publicly exhibit a sculpture in Rusell Square Gardens in central London
Joe Duggan, an Irish artist from Limerick, is the first artist to publicly exhibit a sculpture in Russell Square Gardens central London, with his work Echo.
Echo is a newly commissioned central London public sculpture sponsored by the Commissioners of Russell Square with the support of the Henry Moore Foundation and the Bloomsbury Festival 2024. This monumental artwork stands 4 metres tall.
Resembling hastily erected metal scaffolding with a concrete boulder precariously balanced on top, seemingly defying gravity’s force. Echo is Duggan’s first UK public sculpture commission.
Receiving this commission and having my sculpture exhibited in Russell Square Gardens is a significant milestone in my career. It’s a privilege to contribute to such a historic space, and as an Irish artist, it carries personal meaning to represent my heritage within the UK’s cultural scene. I’m also deeply grateful for the support of the Henry Moore Foundation, which has made this achievement even more special. — Joe Duggan.
Joe Duggan is a Limerick-born artist working in London. Having grown up in Raheen he went on to study art at the Royal College of Art London gaining an M.A. in Fine Art (Photography). His artistic practice includes sculpture, painting, photography, video, publishing and installation.
Through these various media his work considers ideas of value and identity. Focusing on themes of the family, the artists role in society and the influence of hierarchical systems, including religion, on culture.
Echo is inspired by the rich heritage of Russell Square Gardens and the British Museum’s collection, the guiding ideologies of planned architectural environments, and Camden’s Irish community, Echo weaves cultural narratives into its form. Duggan’s use of reclaimed building materials underscores his commitment to sustainability, challenging traditional sculpture norms.
