John Kiely rallies a huge crowd with support at Kilmallock to Kilimanjaro Solidarity Walk in Bruff

The final “Kilmallock to Kilimanjaro” 5km family walk in Bruff on Saturday, August 22nd, was a huge success, with a massive turnout of people coming together in solidarity with Mike and Alanna Murphy and to show their support for the incredible work carried out by CareBright in Bruff.

The beautiful morning saw a large crowd walk alongside father and daughter Mike and Alanna, raising funds and awareness for CareBright and the many people living with dementia and their families who rely on its vital services.

A very special guest for the occasion was six-time All-Ireland-winning manager John Kiely, who joined the walk and helped make it a truly memorable morning. John was accompanied by the Liam MacCarthy Cup and the Irish Press Cup, following the Limerick Minor hurling team’s fantastic success in 2026.

The cups proved to be a huge attraction, with members of the public and residents of CareBright alike absolutely overjoyed to meet John Kiely and have photographs taken with him and the trophies.

Mike Murphy said, “What a morning. We are completely overwhelmed by the incredible turnout and generosity shown to us in Bruff. To walk in solidarity with Alanna, John, our family, friends and the wider community, while surrounded by the wonderful residents and team at CareBright, was something we will never forget. This whole challenge is inspired by my mother Bridie and by everyone living with dementia. We are so grateful to every single person who walked, donated, sponsored, shared our story or simply came along to show their support.”

Alanna Murphy added, “It was such a beautiful and emotional morning. Seeing so many people come out to support us and CareBright gave us an incredible boost as we prepare for Kilimanjaro. Having previously climbed Kilimanjaro, I know how challenging the mountain will be, but knowing we have this amazing community behind us makes every step worthwhile. We cannot thank everyone enough.”

John Kiely said, “It was a privilege to be part of such a wonderful morning in Bruff. The turnout was fantastic, and it was great to see a community come together in support of Mike and Alanna and the important work being done by CareBright. The atmosphere was brilliant, and seeing the residents and members of the public enjoying the morning and getting photographs with the cups was very special. I wish Mike and Alanna every success on Kilimanjaro and hope people will continue to support this fantastic cause.”

The team at CareBright said, “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Mike, Alanna, John Kiely and such a huge crowd to CareBright. It was a beautiful morning and incredibly special for our residents to see so many people walking in solidarity with them and with everyone living with dementia. The kindness and generosity shown to our service and our community means so much. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who took part and helped make the day such a success.”

The Murphys also extended their sincere thanks to The Yarn Café, who generously provided tea, coffee and refreshments for the huge crowd following the walk.

The event marked the culmination of three 5km family walks organised as part of the “Kilmallock to Kilimanjaro” fundraising campaign, with previous walks taking place in Kilmallock and Ballyagran.

The fundraising continues as Mike and Alanna prepare for the ultimate challenge — climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on September 10th — in support of CareBright and its vital services for older people and those living with dementia in the local community.

Mike’s mother Bridie, who is living with dementia, benefits from the services provided by CareBright, making the fundraising challenge particularly personal for the Murphy family.
