Limerick’s John Kinsella to represent Team Ireland at 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships
Inspirational runner, John Kinsella from Southill, has been selected for Team Ireland at the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships this September

John Kinsella, of Southill, the only man over 40 to have completed all six World Marathon Majors in under 2 hours and 30 minutes, has received a call-up to the Irish team travelling to the 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships taking place from September 25 – 28, 2025.
John will travel with his teammates to Canfranc-Pirones, Spain, where a race programme will feature uphill mountain running, classic up-and-down mountain running, short trail, long trail, and U20 classic up-and-down mountain events. John is set to compete in the Short Trail 45k.
On the announcement on the team, John commented, “Can’t wait to suffer with my comrades and then have a bit of craic.”
CanfrancPirineos will host the competition for the first time, where the best runners in the world will meet in a competition that is organised by World Athletics, World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), International Trail Running Association (ITRA), International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), and the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA).
The honour will continue a successful period for the runner who made the senior Irish Mountain Running team in April 2022 and in 2024 joined the Irish team for the British and Irish Masters Cross Country in the over-35 category. In summer 2025 he was part of the Irish representatives who finished in third place, competing at the Inter-Celtic Mountain Running Championships.
John shares his motivational journey with hundreds on the RunningLimerick social media handle and his YouTube channel. This year he announced the foundation of the Back2Boston project, a community-driven initiative aimed at guiding runners from disadvantaged areas to show how the activity can change lives, with the overall aim of competing in the prestigious Boston Marathon.
