Irish Chamber Orchestra welcomes Jörg Widmann for Mostly Mendelssohn

The Irish Chamber Orchestra welcomes back one of Germany’s most talked-about musicians, the clarinettist and composer Jörg Widmann, currently the ICO’s Principal Conductor and Artistic Partner for Mostly Mendelssohn.

In Mostly Mendelssohn, Widmann re-introduces his sister, the violinist, Carolin Widmann in Limerick (University Concert Hall) and Dublin (St Patrick’s Cathedral) who dazzled audiences last year.

A wonderfully versatile musician, Carolin Widmann’s activities span the great classical concerti, new commissions, solo recitals, a wide variety of chamber music.

With the ICO, she performs Mendelssohn’s much-loved Violin Concerto Op. 64 – one of the best-loved of all instrumental concertos.  Widmann’s interpretation of this enchanting concerto is greatly anticipated as it astonishes with its elegance and power.

Mendelssohn’s magical overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream is another startling work of originality.

Widmann’s Paraphrase on Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was a special commission by his friend, the architect Daniel Libeskind and his wife, to celebrate the wedding of their daughter Nina in Rome in September 2016.

This extravagantly virtuosic work by Jörg Widmann and performed by Carolin at the Libeskind Wedding will be repeated in Limerick and Dublin.

The evening culminates with an ICO performance of Schubert’s large-scale masterpiece, his dramatic Symphony No. 9 (The Great), one of Mendelssohn’s favourite works.

The sense of grandeur and space make this work certainly deserved of its Great subtitle and in the hands of Jörg Widmann and the ICO, it will be breathtaking.

Don’t miss Mostly Mendelssohn with the Irish Chamber Orchestra at University Concert Hall, Limerick (Wednesday 15) and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin (Thursday 16) Tickets available on www.irishchamberorchestra.com

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and funded by The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
