The Irish Chamber Orchestra‘s Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Partner Jorg Widmann is one of Germany’s most talked-about musicians. Widmann presents another Mendelessohn showcase highlighting his many talents as a virtuoso clarinetist, composer and conductor. One of Germany’s best exports, he has performed with such greats as András Schiff, Christoph von Dohnányi, Kent Nagano and many more.

Widmann has already achieved the unthinkable in many respects. An award-winning composer, performer and professor of music, his works have been recorded by some of the contemporary music scene’s leading labels and performed by leading instrumentalists.  He has constant media attention with vast audiences listens to his oeuvre, which expands to opera, chamber music, orchestral works and solo instrument compositions.

Widmann introduces the great Russian pianist Igor Levit, one of the world’s most talked about musicians.Levit is regarded as a versatile young artist with the expression and understanding of music unseen in many players. While taking wisdom from older traditions, Levit is unafraid to take risks, adding his own alluring colour and style to his breath-taking performances.

The programme, as always is packed with delights. There’s no better illustration of Mendessohn’sprecocious brilliance than his string symphonies, especially his final offering, No. 12. Levit performs his Piano Concerto in D Minor which is lively and brilliant, though with a delicacy and lightness, so is typical of the composer. Jörg always loved the Andante from Mendelssohn’s early Clarinet Sonata and thought about arranging this work for clarinet and string orchestra, which he has done especially for these concerts. Widmann’s includes his Hunting Quartet  which is wild and exciting, brimming with energy. Finally, Weber’s Symphony No. 2 is really enjoyable with flashes of brilliance that illustrate why Weber was one of the leading lights of the Romantic movement.

Don’t miss a fabulous programme with a world-class star in Igor Levit performing with the Irish Chamber Orchestra on Tuesday 15 March at UCH, Limerick and Wednesday 16 March at the Round Room, at the Mansion House, Dublin.

The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and is funded by The Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
