Journey for John to Support the Staff of ICU, UHL
On behalf of the late John Fitzgerald who passed away this past January, all of the extended Quinn and Fitzgerald family are undertaking a virtual Journey for John from Crecora to Perth to raise money for those who cared for John in his final days.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds supporting the amazing frontline workers in their endeavour to support both patients and families during these unprecedented times.
This fundraiser is organised for the staff at UHL ICU who cared for John Fitzgerald, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, uncle, and friends who sadly passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
The organiser of the fundraiser Denise Rooney spoke about the care John received saying, “The nurses and medical professionals have shown amazing strength and determination throughout this pandemic and even while under this enormous pressure, showed compassion, understanding, and caring to John’s Family”.
To show their appreciation and thanks to the frontline workers, the extended Quinn family will be undertaking a lengthy virtual walk from Crecora, County Limerick John’s homeplace to Perth, Australia the homeplace of his youngest son and new grandson who John had been looking forward to meeting.
It is a journey John didn’t have the privilege of completing so his family will do it virtually on his behalf, walking a total of 15,051 kms.
The staff in UHL have expressed their gratitude to the Fitzgerald’s for taking on this challenge to raise much-needed funds for the ICU department. They have said that the funds will be used for staffing and equipment necessary to fight COVID-19.
A Facebook page called ‘Our Journey for John’ has been set up to document this journey, highlighting each day how many kilometres they have to go.
Ellen Quinn said of the fundraiser, “What an incredible achievement in just 4 days! Our team of walkers is growing every day as friends and family join #ourjourneyforjohn. Every picture shared here is a reminder that we are all thinking about John every day and doing this for him.
The care John received in the ICU is the reason his family wants to support the staff working tirelessly in such challenging conditions.”
