Reigning World Rugby Referee of the Year, Limericks Joy Neville has been selected as a match official for the coming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

After winning six Interprovincial titles with Munster and breaking new ground with that Grand Slam triumph, Joy went on to become one of rugby’s most accomplished referees.

Joy has a great experience in refereeing and has previously officiated the Women’s Rugby World Cup final, refereed a senior men’s international game and became the first woman to officiate in a European Champions Cup game.

Joy is the only IRFU representative selected to officiate the World Series for her third successive year.

There are 15 men’s core teams and 11 women’s core teams competing for the World Series titles and a place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 as the series is used for qualification to the Summer Games. This series is also a stepping stone for Joy to be selected to officiate at the Olympics.

There are 13-strong match officials selected for the Women’s Series including five newcomers with Tyler Miller, from Australia, Emily Hsieh from the United States, former Australian international Madeline Putz, Ashleigh Murray from South Africa, and Lauren Jenner from New Zealand.

Tevita Rokovereni, from France, will join the Women’s Series this season, while experienced campaigners Aimee Barrett-Theron, from South Africa and Rebecca Mahoney, from New Zealand, are stepping down to concentrate on officiating after their stellar Sevens careers.

The Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco demonstrate a high standard of officiating and now these standards have been raised as preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are underway.

This season, the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Series increases to six rounds with USA Rugby hosting the new opening round in Glendale, Colorado, on October 20-21. The men’s series will be contested across 10 rounds with the series-opening set for Dubai on November 30- December 1.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series will be an exciting competition for the people of Limerick to see one of their own, Joy Neville as a crucial referee during the tournament.
