Three Limerick students from Coláiste Nano Nagle were the winners of the Southern Region in the Junk Kouture Grand Final 2021.

Brenda Lim, Brianna Sheehan and Molly Jackson’s amazing creation, ‘Ephemeral Bloom,’ was up against almost 40 other creations by students from all over Ireland on the RTÉ show yesterday.

The beautiful outfit was created using bedsheets, construction mesh, yoga mats, copper, paper coasters, wire, socks, pearl necklaces, lace, a corset from a wedding dress, cardboard, copper wires, flip-flops, styrofoam, and newspaper.

The outfit, worn by Molly, was inspired by designer Yumi Katsura’s Japan Kouture collection and Asian heritage.

“The cherry blossoms design represents the ephemeral nature of life as new fashion drives out the old,” Brianna explained in a video showcasing the team’s creation.

“Our designer, Brenda, wanted to create a beautiful, conscious, evoking looks which bucks the trend of the constant pursuit of protecting our world from fast fashion.”

The girl’s art teacher, Sarah Nestor, also took home an award, winning Teacher of the Year at the Grand Final.

Limerick was again represented at the Junk Kouture Grand Final 2021 yesterday, but this time on the judging panel, by the Head of Department of Fine Art and Education in Limerick School of Art and Design, Dr Tracy Fahey.

Dr Fahey judged the designs alongside model  Roz Purcell, talent judge and music manager Louis Walsh, American media personality Michelle Visage, fashion designer Stephen McLaughlin, and Programme Director for Fashion Design at Griffith College Jane Leavy.

Judge Michelle Visage was blown away at the designs entered in the Grand Final, saying that they’re all unbelievable and, “they’re just superb and the future of fashion.”

Fellow judge Louis Walsh agreed with her sentiment, saying, “Junk Kouture gets better and better each year, and we are going to have some amazing designers out of this!”

Those interested in entering next year’s Junk Kouture can submit their completed designs between Thursday, January 20 and Thursday, February 3, 2022.

Creators must be in education or an approved club and aged between 13 and 18 at the time of submission. Materials used in designs must be recycled, repurposed, or unfit for their intended original purpose. New materials are prohibited.
