Being diagnosed with cancer is one of the worst things that can be put on anyone’s plates but for neighbors and friends, Rosemary Carey and Kelly Keane they battled the disease with dignity following their simultaneous diagnosis in 2012.

Both women decided that they wanted to give back to the Breast Cancer Unit of the University Hospital Limerick by hosting a coffee morning for the unit following their treatment during 2012. Rosemary told me, “we received excellent care during our time in the breast cancer unit.”

The coffee morning was a huge success as the women raised €12,000 on the day for the Symptomatic Breast Unit. 300 attended the coffee morning to help raise much needed funds for the Breast unit. Both Rosemary and Kelly wanted to pay a major thank you to everyone who got involved such as the bakeries and companies that donated items for the coffee morning!

The women would like to pay a special thank you to Ms Shona Tormey, Breast Surgeon in UHL for her informative talk and to Ger Creamer, fellow Breast Cancer survivor who introduced Kelly, Ms Tormey and Rosemary to the crowd. The Ballyneety Golf Club and Johnny Khalife were particularly generous in their giving to the coffee morning as they provided teas, coffees and nibbles!

I had the opportunity to chat with Rosemary about the KaRe for Cancer coffee morning prior to the event. Rosemary told me that “the coffee morning is generating a lot of interest” both on their Facebook page and through word of mouth!

During the KaRe for Cancer coffee morning, anyone who attended was treated to coffee, tea and treats provided by the Ballyneety Golf Club. The KaRe for Cancer coffee morning took place from 10am until 1pm. There was amazing spot prizes on the day that were donated specially for the coffee morning  from all over the city and county of Limerick.

It truly was a wonderful morning and brilliant excuse to meet up with friends for a coffee whilst also supporting a very worthy cause.

As well as chitchat between friends, Shauna Tormey, a leading surgeon for Breast Cancer in the University Hospital Limerick attended the coffee morning and spoke to everyone about the astonishing and inspiring work that they do in the Breast Cancer Unit in UHL.

Due to the success of this year KaRe for Cancer Coffee morning both Rosemary and Kelly hope to continue the event onto next year! We cannot wait to see what this amazing fundraising event turns into as there really is a magical feel to it!
