Limerick man, Josh Campbell, honours his late aunt, Karen Foley, who brought joy to everyone around her by raising funds for two local charities in the 2025 Regeneron Great Limerick Run this May bank holiday weekend
A Limerick man is taking on the Regeneron Great Limerick Run this May bank holiday weekend in honour of his late aunt, Karen Foley, with the aim of raising much-needed funds for two local charities.
Josh Campbell, 24, has committed to running the Regeneron Great Limerick Run this May in memory of his late aunt, raising funds for local addiction, homelessness, and suicide prevention services.
despite having never run more than 10km in his life, Josh is undertaking the challenge to honour his aunt, Karen Foley, who passed away in September 2023 in her early 40s.
The young Limerick man is raising funds for both Limerick Suicide Watch, who patrol the banks of the Shannon River in Limerick City and for Thomond House, a charity that helps women battling addiction and homelessness.
Speaking about his motivation for the fundraiser, Josh shared a message on one of two GoFundMe pages for each charity, saying, ” I am running the limerick half marathon in may, in remembrance of my beautiful aunt Karen who sadly passed away on the 28th of September 2023 I will never forget how much joy she brought to everyone around her and I will forever miss her and will do everything in my power to assure that her name lives on.
“So that’s why I’m fundraising for Thomond House, who help women battling addiction as well as homelessness. It’s for a great cause, lads anyone in a position to donate is greatly appreciated.”
Limerick Suicide Watch relies entirely on donations from the public to fund its training, safety equipment, and operational costs. Volunteers patrol the city’s riverbanks on key nights throughout the week and expand their outreach during high-risk periods such as exam result nights and holidays. Thomond House, similarly, depends on fundraising efforts to continue providing vital services to vulnerable women in the community.
Thomond House Women’s Shelter is the flagship of the Thomond House services, which opened in 1994. Since then, Thomond House has served the city and region as a tremendous housing vehicle for more than two decades. The service provides up to 24 beds/places of emergency accommodation and supports for women over 18 years who are “at risk” and homeless.
The Regeneron Great Limerick Run, scheduled for the May Bank Holiday Weekend, is expected to attract a record number of participants in 2025. The event is the largest mass participation sporting event outside of Dublin, drawing thousands of runners each year.
With an initial goal of €500 on each charity fundraiser page, donations and messages of support have been coming in for Josh and he has eclipes the initial goal with the overall amount raised so far almost reaching €2,000. The Limerick man’s fundraiser can help ensure both Limerick Suicide Watch and Thomond House continue their critical work in the community.
