Tributes paid to ‘trailblazer’ and former Mayor of Limerick, Kathleen Leddin

Tributes have been paid to the former Mayor of Limerick, Kathleen Leddin, described as the “perfect person” to hold the position from 2013 to 2014

The people of Limerick have been saddened to learn of the passing of Kathleen Leddin, former Mayor of Limerick who held the position from 2013 to 2014 and served as a councillor from 1999 to 2014.

Kathleen is remembered as a person who served Limerick with distinction and “dedication to the social and economic development of Limerick”.

Kathleen’s late husband, Tim Leddin, also served as Mayor of Limerick and was a Fine Gael councillor in Limerick City. Her son Brian Leddin was the first Green Party Limerick City and County Councillor and is a former Limerick TD. Mrs Leddin will be sadly missed by her children, Timothy, Morgan, Brian and Gregory and stepmother to Deirdre, Anthony, Desmond and Joan, as well as her daughters-in-law Edel, Karine, Helen, Celeste and Liz, sons-in-law Peter and John, her cherished 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

Paying tribute to his late mother, Brian Leddin wrote, “My wonderful mother, Kathleen, has left us tonight. We will miss her incredibly. Mum was an inspiration to me and countless others. She was a brilliant storyteller with a long memory of Limerick City, Donoughmore and Murroe, and so many other places that were dear to her. Mum was resilient, smart, adventurous, and, above all, one of the kindest and funniest people you could meet. She brought joy to us all and gave us immense love. Rest in peace, mum.”

Kathleen’s nephew, Joe Leddin, is a sitting Labour councillor on Limerick City and County Counci,l making the Leddin family a cornerstone of public service in Limerick.

Mayor of Limerick, Cllr John Moran, expressed his heartfelt condolences, saying, “Kathleen was a trailblazer; she was always pushing myself and many others as a mentor in terms of public service. We’ve lost a super person in Limerick today, who has done so much for the city and the wider region.” 

He noted, “Her legacy will be public service steeply rooted in family and education, from her long number of years as Councillor to serving as Mayor, which I know meant so much to her and her family. I offer my sincere condolences and sympathies to her loved ones and many friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.”

Local Historian, Dr Paul O’Brien, paid tribute to the late Limerick lady, saying, “So very sorry to hear about the passing of Kathleen Leddin, 817th Mayor of Limerick. I was honoured to record an oral history with Kathleen a few years ago and delighted that she attended my book launch. A true servant of Limerick, she will be sorely missed.”

Labour Party TD, Conor Sheehan, spoke of Kathleen Leddin as a “remarkable woman” on learning of her passing, he said, “Very sorry to hear about the passing of Kathleen Leddin. A remarkable woman, an effective politician and the perfect person to serve as the final Mayor of Limerick. Ar dheis dé go raibh a hanam dílis.”

Fine Gael Councillor, Olivia O’Sullivan wrote, “It is sad to hear about the passing of Kathleen Leddin, former Mayor of Limerick City, only the 6th woman ever in the role. I enjoyed Kathleen’s company whenever we met, whether at city events, the Milk Market or more locally in the northside. Condolences to Brian and family.”

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly, added, “Kathleen’s tenure as councillor and Mayor was marked by her dedication to the social and economic development of Limerick. She was a dedicated and passionate public servant and always courteous in her dealings with staff. May she rest in peace.”

Reposing at her home on Friday (9th May) from 5pm to 8pm. Funeral arriving at Our Lady of the Rosary Church on Saturday (10th May) for Requiem Mass at 10.30am, followed by burial in Mount St. Oliver Cemetery.
