Limerick saddened by the passing of “wonderful man” Kieran Clancy
People of Limerick have been paying tribute to renowned photographer, Kieran Clancy, following the news of his passing on Friday, October 10

Limerick photography, journalism community and beyond are mourning the passing of a dear colleague, friend, husband, father, and grandfather, Kieran Clancy, who is remembered as a “wonderful man” and professional.
A native of Mayorstone and later of Caherdavin Lawn, Kieran Clance is one of the MidWest region’s most respected press photographers and is sadly missed by his wife Marianne, her children Rory, Tim, Elizabeth and Maebh, Kieran’s children David, Stephen and Lydia, grandchildren Brianna, Luca and Matthew, daughter-in-law Claudia, sister Catherine, brothers Michael, John and the late Kevin, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives.
Mr Clancy was known for his decades of work in photojournalism, capturing life in Limerick and the Midwest, as a staff photographer with the now Irish Examiner before going on to a successful career as a freelance photographer.
Kieran is remembered as a kind and gentle man who was always willing to lend a hand and help a fellow professional where needed. His sharp eye and ability to stay on top of any story saw him chronicle life in the Midwest for more than 40 years.
Paying tribute to Kieran online, Assistant General Secretary of the National Union of Journalists, Seamus Dooley said, “Kieran Clancy was an outstanding photographer and followed in a great family tradition;: he was gifted, creative, committed and generous as a friend and colleague. Sympathy to family and friends at this sad time.”
During his time with the Cork Examiner, Kieran was trusted with some of the paper’s most major assignments, a testament to his work ethic. Kieran was honoured with the assignment to take one of the first-ever Cork Examiner colour photos when he covered the famous Munster v All Blacks game in 1978.
Following his time with the Examiner, Kieran opened his own commercial studio in Mungret, where he was embedded in the community and had a successful time documenting memories for people as a wedding and corporate photographer. An active member of the National Union of Journalists, Kieran also served as President for the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, and in 2021 was awarded an honorary membership in recognition of his contribution to press photography in Ireland.
Kieran Clancy passed away peacefully at Riverdale Nursing Home, Ardnacrusha, on October 10, 2025, in the presence of his loving family. Requiem Mass takes place at St John’s Cathedral, Limerick, on Monday, October 13, at 11 am, followed by burial at Mount St Oliver Cemetery. Family flowers only; donations, if desired, to Parkinson’s Ireland.
