The Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk in 2015, taking place on Sun June 28 and starting at 1pm, is the sixth annual walk in Killaloe and is in aid of Action Breast Cancer and the Irish Cancer Society.

The walk is open to men and women, runners and walkers, all over the age of 12. Over 2000 people supported and took part in the walk in 2014, with almost 1,000 walkers and runners participating.  The Killaloe Pink Ribbon walk is just one of the 4 Pink Ribbon Walks taking place throughout the country, with other walks happening in Kells, Co. Meath, Kenmare, Co Kerry and Kinsale, Co Cork. Over 1 million euro has been raised since the first walk took place in 2009. These funds have provided much needed support and information about breast cancer.

The Daffodil Centre, which was made possible with the funds raised from the Pink Ribbon Walks, is located at the entrance to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and is a resource dedicated to offering information and support to those in need of help. The Centre, which opened this Feb, is run by an Irish Cancer Society Information service nurse, who is accompanied by a number of other trained volunteers, and anyone affected by cancer, or those with concerns about cancer, can avail of the information and support offered.

Appointment or referrals with the Daffodil Centre are not necessary, allowing those with queries to drop in at any time during opening hours, or to call or email.

Josephine Hynes, the group director of HR for UL hospitals said about the centre: “We share their vision to transform the patient experience in relation to cancer information and support”.

Melanie Hunt, a breast cancer survivor, created the ‘Knackered Knockers’ Facebook page in 2013, to offer people a forum to share their stories and discuss anything related to breast cancer. Ms Hunt will be running the Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk, June 28, and has also set up a fundraising page, which has currently reached 75 per cent of its target. Any donation, no matter the amount, is hugely appreciated.

Statistics show that one in 10 women in Ireland will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and the Pink Ribbon Walks work toward ensuring that no woman has to embark on the breast cancer journey alone.

For information about cancer, you can call the National Cancer Helpline at 1800 200 700
