Delving into new digital realms, this year’s programme was brought to life through a series of virtual live and pre-recorded concerts from Clare, Limerick and Germany presented by RTE lyric FM’s Paul Herriott.

In her first year as artistic director, Katherine Hunka created a show-stopping programme supporting Irish musicians from around the globe to join in the celebration of music. Through works by Bach, Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann, a world premiere by Malachy Robinson and poet Jane Robinson, and the ‘Let’s Play Together’ children’s concert, the weekend festival was an immersive experience for all the family.

On Friday 4th June, the Killaloe Virtual Music Festival 2021 opened with an enchanting version of J.S. Bach’s Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor, performed by artistic director and violinist, Katherine Hunka and the echoing voices of Cómhar. Surrounded by self-portraits made by local 5th and 6th class students from Ballina primary school, the performance was truly breathtaking.  Friday’s programme also included Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet featuring Carol McGonnell, clarinet, Diane Daly, violin, Siún Milne, violin, Joachim Roewer, viola, and Christopher Ellis, cello.

The popular Late-Night Concert welcomed the young, talented cellist Christopher Ellis who performed Bach’s first unaccompanied Suite for Cello. Diane Daly captivated the audience with her unique take and imaginative interpretation of Ysaÿe’s Violin Sonata Op, 27 No. 2.

On Saturday 5th June, Katherine Hunka invited cellist Zoë Nagle and pianist Clara Siegle to perform works by Bach, Brahms, and Martinů. They recorded their performances in Germany, especially for the ‘Rising Star Concert.

Saturday evening’s concert featured internationally acclaimed Irish pianist Finghin Collins with cellist Christopher Ellis and a world premiere “For the Atoll “composed by Malachy Robinson with poetry by Jane Robinson, played by Far Flung Trio.  The evening’s concert concluded with a spectacular performance of Ernst von Donhnányi’s Sextet in C major Op.37 with Katherine Hunka, violin; Joachim Roewer, viola; Christopher Ellis, cello; Carol McGonnell, clarinet; Finghin Collins, piano; Hannah Miller, French horn.

Sunday’s Lunchtime Concert kicked off with performances by Finghin Collins, piano, Carol McGonnell, clarinet and Hannah Miller, French horn in inspired performances of works by Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn.

The hugely popular ‘Let’s Play Together’ Children’s Concert included a series of performances under the musical direction of Diane Daly. The recitals included five talented groups of musicians from the Limerick School of Music and the Munster Music Academy.
