Ireland’s First Black Pudding Festival Face-Off Promises Mighty Craic at Kilteely Dromkeen Festival
Get the pans hot and the aprons ready — Kilteely is about to find out who really makes the best black pudding in the parish at the Kilteely Dromkeen Festival!
As part of this year’s Kilteely Dromkeen Community Festival, the village will host the Great Black Pudding Competition, and organisers are calling on home cooks and local butchers alike to throw their hats — and their puddings — into the ring. This is the first time in Ireland there is festival based black pudding competition open to home cooks with family recipes.
The competition will take place on Sunday August 31st in Kilteely Village and promises a sizzling good time for all involved.
“Everyone says their pudding is the best — now’s their chance to prove it,” laughed festival organiser Noel O’Dea. “We’re expecting fierce competition, plenty of local pride, and maybe even a few family secrets getting spilled along the way!”
“The making of black pudding is a dying art”, continued Noel. “We want to make sure this culturally important Irish food and the traditional ways of making it are not lost to future generations. We know there are families out there who have a recipe so we are encouraging you to dig it out and have a go, you never you, you might win!”
There are two categories for entries:
- Home Cooks – If you’ve got a killer breakfast fry, a pudding-stuffed pastry, or a family recipe you’ve sworn to protect since 1950, now’s your moment.
- Local Butchers – Think your pudding is the pride of the counter? Let the people (and the judges) decide.
Entries will be judged on flavour, texture, originality, and overall “puddin’ perfection.” And yes — there will be prizes, but more importantly, there will be bragging rights. Winners will be crowned Black Pudding Champion of Kilteely Dromkeen 2025 — and likely talked about for years to come.
“We are thrilled to have Kate Ryan and Chris Towers as judges for our first year’” said Helen Cooke, one of the committee members. “Kate Ryan is an award winning food writer and founder of Flavour.ie. She has been a Blas na hEireann judge for many years. Chris is the Director of Food Story PR & Marketing and a real champion of Limerick food. We are hoping they will have lots of tasty puddings to try on the 31st!”
To enter, message the festival Facebook or Instagram page or call Noel O’Dea on 087 627 8022. Entry is free, and all are welcome. Festival organisers can help with sourcing ingredients.
