Laurel Hill Secondary School Sing Shallow in Irish for Seachtain na Gaeilge

Laurel Hill Secondary School translated and performed the Oscar-winning original song ‘Shallow’ in Irish, for Seachtain na Gaeilge on Friday, March 15. The girls who took part in the performance were from first, second and fifth year. The singers practised the song over the course of the 2 weeks that Seachtain na Gaeilge ran for. The performance of the award-winning song was a great way to conclude Seachtain na Gaeilge.

The idea for the translation and performance stemmed from the Irish Department at Laurel Hill Secondary School, who wanted to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and go out with a bang. The Irish department reached out to the music teachers of the school Suzanne Creaven and Ann Lawless, who is also Assistant Principal at the school.

The Irish department, led by James Kelly, translated the song, which was written by the award-winning singer Lady Gaga. As there is a difficulty with translating songs, as direct translation cannot always be achieved, the song was translated but with an emphasis placed on the importance of well-being and mental health. 

Last year, Laurel Hill had translated and performed The Cranberries iconic song, ‘Zombie’, in memory of Dolores O’Riordan, which went viral and was picked up by Ray D’Arcy, who spoke about it on his Saturday night TV show, ‘The Ray D’Arcy Show.’

Music teacher, Suzanne Creaven spoke where the idea came from, “A couple of weeks ago the Irish Department was trying to figure out what they’d do for Seachtain na Gaeilge, so they approached me and Ms Lawless, the other music teacher, and asked us were we interested in getting involved.”

“So, they translated the lyrics, we got the band together, and I suppose we met half-way. It was a really fun project, something that’s building on from what we did last year, in ‘Zombie’. So yeah, it was great fun and a great afternoon.”
