Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP) tree initiative will support the planting of 4,000 native Irish woodland trees in Crecora, County Limerick this month
This action by Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP) is a direct response to the company’s pledge to embrace the UN Sustainable Development Goals as part of its strategic plan.
LEDP has stated its intention to plant 27,000 trees in Limerick by 2027, offsetting over 4,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the next100 years, whilst also supporting the promotion of biodiversity. The UN has declared that biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate, and the pressures driving this decline are intensifying.
Each tree planted will help absorb CO2, provide habitats for wildlife, and contribute to the restoration of local ecosystems. To date, LEDP has initiated the planting of over 18,000 trees including Pedunculate Oak, Scots Pine, and White Thorn.
Niall O’Callaghan, Chief Executive, LEDP said, “We believe that taking proactive steps to protect the environment is not just a responsibility, but an opportunity to make a lasting difference. By planting trees, we are not only neutralising our carbon footprint but also giving back to the planet that sustains us. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to sustainability and responsible corporate practices.”
In addition to tree planting, LEDP is implementing various other green initiatives, including the eradication of fossil fuel use and transitioning to energy-saving LED technology, amongst other actions.
LEDP is supporting the planting programme through the Department of Agriculture’s Woodland Environment Fund (WEF). The trees will be planted in County Limerick as identified by LEDP’s partner, SWS Forestry Services. The native tree plantations will create a wildlife corridor for native species and enable grassland to revert to more natural vegetation, further enhancing biodiversity in the area.
Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP) is an independent not-for-profit organisation synonymous with Limerick’s transformation over the past 25 years. Through its diverse activities and its many partnerships, LEDP connects people to opportunities based on the principle of ‘helping people to help themselves.
As well as facilitating charities, state agencies, training providers, and commercial businesses at the LEDP Campus in Roxboro, it operates the Family Tree Crèche which it built in 2005, and owns the Market Field Stadium in Garryowen, which it successfully redeveloped to a UEFA Category Two Stadium.
LEDP is a self-funding charity established with a vision to see all the people of Limerick realise their full potential. LEDP believes that what they do together with partners is greater than the sums of the parts they play on their own.
