Taoiseach Leo Varadkar visited St Muchins Community Centre in Limerick last Friday to see the current work that the centre does with the people of Limerick. He was looking at the school’s outreach services and presented awards to staff at the centre who are receiving QQI Level 5 Awards in Healthcare. Mr Varadkar also launched the QQI Level 5 Hairdressing course and learned all about the Age Well programme run by the centre.

Linda Ledger, St Munchins Community Centre Manager spoke to I Love Limerick about the historic visit saying, “We are delighted he is visiting us today and that he is willing to look at all the great work we do. There is a great buzz around the centre today as everyone working here really cares about the work we do and the difference it makes to our community. Having a visit from the Taoiseach is an opportunity to show just how proud we are in the centre.”

St. Munchin’s Community Centre has had an active role in promoting and developing community involvement within Limerick since 2005. The Centre has developed a broad representative base from within the community.

The continued funding and support of FÁS, Limerick City Council, the HSE and the JP McManus Benevolent Fund has allowed St. Munchins to continue running their core activities. Previous high-profile visitors to the centre include President Michael D Higgins and JP McManus who launched the centre in 2005.

They centre aims to provide a central accessible community hub accommodating local service providers. They provide meeting space for local community and voluntary groups. Also, they aim to address isolation and social exclusion for the older members of the community and identify and respond to local needs.

A voluntary Board of Management who lives or works in the local community manages St Munchins Community Centre.

The “Board” consists of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, and Committee. Linda has been the full-time manager for a number of years. Her team has worked very hard over the past years building and developing on the aims and objectives as a community development organisation in St. Munchin’s Parish. The management team meets regularly to carry out and monitor progress on ongoing projects and services to the community. They have achieved great success in doing so over the years.
