Young Limerick author Leonard Engels self-publishes debut novel, Verenig, through Amazon KDP

18-year-old author Leonard Engels has announced the release of his debut novel, Verenig, through Amazon KDP, an incredible milestone in the young author‘s career.

Verenig is a fantasy story based in the fictional continent of Nordeirland, following the journey of a young Prince Anton following his banishment from the Stonic Kingdom, and a young inventor Lev. This book includes themes of grief, redemption, war, and violence.

Corruption and war begin to overrun the continent of Nordeirland, and Prince Anton has to learn what way he wants to lead while being filled with resentment for those who banished him, and Lev must learn what he wants to create with his talent as he looks to prove himself to his military commander father.

Speaking about the milestone publication, Leonard said, “This book has taken me three years to write. Ever since I was a child, I have loved stories and was inspired by shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender, and recently, Vinland Saga. It has been a childhood dream to write a book one day, and I am absolutely blessed to be in the position I am right now.”

Lev is a character who was born with extraordinary talent for invention, but his father only wanted a warrior. For years, Lev has been desperately trying to prove his worth to his father, before he eventually comes across a wonderful discovery that could change the world. Lev has to decide how he wants to use this discovery. Does he want to build a world where people can live without suffering, or a world where he can feel his father’s love for the first time?

Alongside these characters stands Oslo Culloo, a morally complicated character who has been shaped by years of violence, and acts as a mentor to Anton during the book following the death of Anton’s father, Verenig Miro.

Anton for a long time is filled with feelings of hatred and resentment, but eventually learns that if he wants to save his country and continent from war, he will have to grow and set those feelings aside, so he can learn what it takes for him to become a great leader one day.

Leonard said, “At first, I wanted to write a story of pure fantasy. Stuff like dragons, magic and cool powers. But after a difficult and challenging year, I decided I wanted to write something that could leave a positive message and impact on the world. So, I decided to start from scratch. I took several ideas from different drafts I had written, and after putting pieces together, I came up with the story of Verenig. A story about grief, hatred, anger, as well as redemption, peace, and love. I hope that it can act as a message and inspiration to someone out there that it is never too late to change.”

The Limerick author said publishing through Amazon KDP gave him “creative freedom” to write what he wants.

He said, “I chose to publish on Amazon KDP because I feel it gives me a lot of creative freedom to write what I want. Having this book self-published and being able to hold it in my hands, and seeing others enjoy it, has been the greatest honour of my life, and the best feeling I’ve ever experienced. It never gets old, and it is just extraordinary. I am forever grateful to everyone who has helped support me on this journey and has supported the books release.”
