Lets make Limerick Number 1 Darkness into Light Location

Joan Freeman, founder and CEO of suicide crisis centre Pieta House, was in Limerick to launch the 2013 Darkness into Light event and Mayor of Limerick Gerry McLoughlin turned out to show his support, along with Munster rugby players Conor Murray, Mike Sherry and Sean Scanlon. Pieta House is a suicide and self-harm crisis centre and provides a professional, face-to-face, free of charge therapeutic service for people in the acute stages of distress. Limerick is one of 20 locations this year to host Darkness into Light, a unique 5km walk/run which begins in darkness at 4.00am and ends as dawn is breaking. Taking place on Saturday May 11, this year’s event will get underway at Thomond Park and organisers are hoping for a turnout of several thousand people from all across the Mid-West. “Last year’s Darkness into Light event in Limerick was one of the biggest in the country, second only to the Phoenix Park in Dublin,” Joan tells me. “Back in 2010 Limerick was the second location to come on board and I’m thrilled to say that this will be the fourth year of Darkness into Light Limerick and we want to make it the best yet. We’re setting the people of Limerick a challenge – to beat Dublin this year and make yours the biggest event in the country,” she added. Registration is available online now at dil.pieta.ie and Pieta House volunteers will also be setting up stall in the old Ferguson’s Chemist on O’Connell Street in Limerick for people who wish to register in person. They will be there from 11am to 4pm every Friday and Saturday from April 12 – 13 up until the day of the walk. For more information on how to register, contact Kieran O’Brien in Pieta Mid-West on 061 484444.
