The sod at Lidl Ireland’s latest development in Towlerton, Ballysimon, has been officially turned, paving the way for construction of a new state-of-the-art concept store which will create 30 permanent new jobs in the area when it opens in early 2025.

Planning permission was granted for the mixed-use site by Limerick City and County Council last August. Developed in conjunction with Kirkland Investments Ltd., the site will comprise a flagship Lidl store along with commercial, residential and office space.

Lidl’s store at Towlerton, Ballysimon, will be its sixth outlet in Limerick, following the recent opening of its Dock Road store. Up to 100 construction jobs will be supported during the development phase which got underway this week with contractors Monami Construction breaking ground to develop the 2,205 sqm retail unit.

With the retailer’s pioneering concept design incorporating an ISO 50001-certified energy management system, high performing energy efficient technologies and the installation of solar panels put sustainability as a priority for the new store.

Turning the sod at Lidl’s new site in Ballysimon, Mayor of Limerick John Moran said the retailers commitment to Limerick and the Mid West is “warmly welcomed” and noted the importance of Limerick neighbourhoods having “a wide range of services and amenities”.

The building is being erected on a new access road off the City East Roundabout and the planned completion of the Bloodmill Road Extension works in early 2025 will further transform the East side of the city, connecting the City East Roundabout all the way down to Childers Road.

Tara O’Connor, Regional Managing Director at Lidl Ireland added, “We are delighted to have the support of Mayor of Limerick John Moran as we break ground on our new state-of-the-art Limerick store today.

“Limerick is hugely important to Lidl, as we have traded proudly here since 2000 with the Childers Road branch, one of the first stores to open in the country.

“The development of our new store in Ballysimon represents a major investment for Lidl, contributing significantly to the local economy and providing long term employment for the area as we expand our store network in Limerick city to six stores.

“With construction now underway with our construction partners Monami Construction, the local community can look forward to an unrivalled retail experience, shopping high quality products with Ireland’s best value retailer when we open our doors in early 2025.”

Earlier this year, Lidl Ireland announced a total of €18 million worth of goods and services was procured from Limerick suppliers and business partners by the retailer in 2023. Lidl’s key Limerick suppliers include Kilmallock-based Glen Áine Foods who has been working with the retailer since 2015, supplying Irish carved beef. Ballyneety-based Ishka supply Lidl with spring water and Ballyhoura’s Applewood Farm who have supplied the retailer with a selection of award-winning condiments since 2018.

Lidl Ireland currently employs more than 6,000 employees in its 179 stores, Head Office in Tallaght and three distribution centres and regional offices based in Mullingar, Newbridge and Charleville in County Cork which will service the planned new Ballysimon store.
