History Made Again – Limerick complete a perfect Season as the 2026 All Ireland Hurling Champions

Limerick are once again the kings of hurling after producing a superb display to defeat Galway 1-29 to 1-18 in the 2026 All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon.

John Kiely’s side delivered a commanding performance from start to finish to reclaim the Liam MacCarthy Cup and underline their status as one of the greatest teams in the history of the game. The victory marks Limerick’s 13th All-Ireland senior hurling title and a remarkable sixth championship success under the management of Kiely, who has overseen an extraordinary era for hurling in the county.

The comprehensive win over Galway also means Limerick have now captured six All-Ireland titles in the last nine years, further cementing their place among the sport’s modern greats. After surrendering the title last season, the Shannonsiders responded in emphatic fashion to regain the biggest prize in hurling and complete what has been a flawless campaign.

Limerick controlled the contest throughout and rarely looked troubled by their opponents. While Galway battled hard, Kiely’s men consistently found another gear, with their pace, work rate and clinical finishing proving too much to handle. Their dominance was reflected on the scoreboard as they gradually pulled clear in the second half.

One of the defining moments of the final arrived in the 43rd minute when Cathal O’Neill fired home a superb goal that effectively put the game beyond Galway’s reach. The Crecora-Manister clubman was making his first All-Ireland final start, having previously featured as a substitute during Limerick’s championship victories in 2022 and 2023. His composed finish sparked huge celebrations among the travelling supporters and gave Limerick the breathing space they needed before they powered on to an 11-point victory.

The 2026 All Ireland Hurling Champions triumph completes a dream season for Limerick, who have swept every major competition before them in 2026. Their remarkable journey began back in January with success in the Munster Hurling League before they added the National Hurling League title on Easter Sunday. They then captured the Munster Senior Hurling Championship earlier this summer before completing the clean sweep by lifting the Liam MacCarthy Cup at Croke Park.

Winning every competition available is a remarkable achievement and highlights the consistency, determination and quality that has become synonymous with this Limerick team under John Kiely. From the opening weeks of the year to the final whistle on All-Ireland final day, they have set the standard in hurling.

Much of the build-up to Sunday’s decider centred on the fact that it was a repeat of the memorable 2018 All-Ireland final, when Limerick ended a 45-year wait for Liam MacCarthy. There was plenty of talk about the occasion representing a “full circle” moment for the current generation of players. However, if this latest performance is anything to go by, this Limerick team is far from reaching the end of its journey.

Instead, the display suggested there is still plenty more to come from a squad that continues to evolve while maintaining the hunger and desire that has defined its success over the past decade. The blend of experienced leaders and emerging talent once again proved a winning formula on the biggest stage.

Minutes after the final whistle, Cian Lynch walked the steps of the Hogan Stand to to accept the cup for the first time since 2023.

“Liam is coming home!” he exclaimed adding it it was an “absolute honour and privlege”.

Cian acknowledged the contribution made by every member of the panel and John Kiely and the management team.

The celebrations are now well underway following another unforgettable day for Treaty supporters. The victorious squad will remain in Dublin on Sunday night for the traditional All-Ireland banquet before making the journey home to Limerick on Monday evening.

A representative of Limerick GAA paid tribute to the incredible backing the team has received throughout the championship.

“The support this team receives from the people of Limerick is extraordinary and there is no doubt it played a significant role throughout the championship. We saw that support in Croke Park and we saw it again at the Big Screen event in Pery Square.”

After another unforgettable campaign, Limerick return home as All-Ireland champions once again. A sixth title in nine years, a perfect season with every trophy on offer secured, and another chapter written in what is already one of the greatest eras in the history of hurling. The Treaty County’s golden generation has once again reached the summit, and judging by Sunday’s outstanding performance, there is every indication that this remarkable team is not finished yet.

Organisers are asking supporters attending the homecoming celebration to continue showing the pride and respect that has been a hallmark of Limerick supporters throughout the championship.

Thousands of supporters are expected to line the streets and gather at Pery Square to welcome home the All-Ireland champions and celebrate another famous chapter in the county’s sporting history on Monday, July 20th, 2026.

The event is being hosted by Limerick GAA and Limerick City and County Council, providing supporters of all ages the opportunity to celebrate another historic achievement for Limerick hurling.

The event, MC’d by Limerick’s own Catriona Tierney, will see entertainment provided by DJ Mark McCabe, singer Gearoid McCarthy, and special guests.
