Become A Beekeeper with Limerick Beekeepers Association beginner course
Limerick Beekeepers Association (LBKA) is a voluntary organisation and affiliated with the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations (FIBKA). Founded in 1965 they currently have over a hundred members ranging in ages from 11 to 80 years of age.
The association is holding their annual beginner course over two days on the 23rd and 30th March in Rathkeale House Hotel, this will be followed up by practical demonstrations at the association apiary. Topics covered include the beekeeping year, equipment, bee health, practical hive inspections and harvesting your honey. Apiary practical demonstrations will be run by experienced members and are guided through every aspect.
Their aims are to promote beekeeping for everyone from the hobbyist to the serious professional, together with environmental awareness in our geographical area. In winter, association meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month in Mungret GAA Hall. Great emphasis is placed on improving all members’ knowledge of beekeeping at all levels. Top Lecturers from the FIBKA approved panel regularly attend educating in all aspects of beekeeping. The meetings provide a social outlet for members to meet and mingle, discuss all issues around beekeeping in the community over a cup of tea.
The association apiary is located in the Old Grounds of Mungret College. The apiary is central to the training and developing beekeeping skills among their members. LBKA supports the All-Ireland Pollination Plan through developing the site with pollination friendly planting with particular emphasis on native plants and creating a habitat for other wild pollinators eg bumblebees. Members meet regularly to upkeep the site.
