Limerick Camogie star Caoimhe Costelloe joined GAA Legends for the third Plant the Planet Games to raise funds for Self Help Africa

The Planet Games brought a mixture of sport, culture, and a bid to help the environment to life as Irish and Kenyan communities came together for the third edition of the games.
Held in November, the games highlighted the amazing work of Self Help Africa and its mission to combat climate change while promoting sustainability.
GAA Legends were joined by Kenyan Premier League football players from AFC Leopards SC as well as other sporting icons including Limerick’s Caoimhe Costelloe as the group raised funds to collectively plant more than 1 million trees in Kenya and beyond.
“What a wonderful day with the families and school children of Londiani, Kenya. We built stoves and planted trees together for these families to live off into the future. Thank you to everyone for the support you’ve shown us,” Caoimhe Costelloe said on Twitter about the experience.
In a post on Instagram showing their gratitude, Self Help Africa said, “To our GAA legends from all over Ireland, taking a week out of your busy lives to be part of this special initiative means a lot – to see the impact of Self Help Africa’s work, and to fundraise an incredible amount to collectively plant more than one million trees in Kenya & beyond. We’re so grateful to each & every one of you.”
They added, “It’s not every day – the last time was probably this time last year – you see GAA & soccer stars take to the pitch together! A big shout out & thank you to Kenyan Premier League football team AFC LEopards SC for taking part again this year, and to Strathmore University for hosting.”
Self Help Africa’s mission is to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality and the impact of climate change and achieve this through community-led, market-based and enterprise focused approaches to agricultural development, ensuring that people have access to nutritious food; decent incomes and employment; clean water and basic services; and all while sustaining natural resources.
