The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force on the 25th May 2018, replacing the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive.

As a regulation, it will not generally require transposition into Irish law (regulations have ‘direct effect’), so organisations involved in data processing of any sort need to be aware the regulation addresses them directly in terms of the obligations it imposes. The GDPR emphasises transparency, security, and accountability by data controllers and processors, while at the same time standardising and strengthening the right of European citizens to data privacy.
To help raise awareness of this, the Limerick Chamber hosted a Limerick Chamber Business Excellence Seminar on data protection as part of their series of seminars on Tuesday, March 6th. The event was held at the Greenhills Hotel, Limerick and was sponsored by Limerick Chamber Skillnet. The event provided an overview of the steps that businesses need to put in place to comply with GDPR and was well attended by both Limerick Chamber members and non-members.
Raising awareness among organisations and the public aware of the new law will be a combined effort of the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), the Government, practitioners, and industry and professional representative bodies. Over the course of 2017, the DPC will be proactively undertaking a wide range of initiatives to build awareness of the GDPR, in particular providing guidance to help organisations prepare for the new law which comes into force on 25 May 2018.
Key points from speakers were to encourage companies to focus on awareness and understanding among all employees for the legislation which will come into force on the 25th May 2018, replacing the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive.
An engaging Q and A session followed all speaker’s addresses, this proved to be a real value for those who attended, who gained insight from all speakers on the best approach to take to prepare for the upcoming legislation. Key questions focused on data collection for marketing purposes and using data for biometric purposes.
Garrett O’Neill, Assistant Commissioner with Responsibility for Compliance and Policy Guidance, Office of the Data Protection Commissioner is Head of Consultation in the Private and Financial sectors in the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. He is an experienced Assistant Commissioner with a demonstrated history of working as a Solicitor in the public and private sectors. Skilled in advising on all data protection compliance issues to the Insurance, Banking, Retail, Telecommunications, State agencies etcetera. He is also a member of the EU Article 29 Working Group for the past 5 years.
Marie Murphy, Director of Operations, Fort Privacy Partners is co-founder and operations director of Fort Privacy Partners which offers a full range of operational, legal and technical data protection solutions. Marie is a Certified Data Protection Officer(CDPO) with a background in business and communications. Previously CEO of an internet start-up, she has first-hand experience of the data protection challenges facing business. As a result, her work focuses on providing practical, operational advice and solutions that can be applied to business. Marie also specialises in Privacy by Design and trains on the topic for the Irish Computer Society as part of their European Certified Data Protection Officer Programme. Marie’s philosophy is that data protection is not just about compliance. Done properly, it enables organisations to build trusted relationships with their customers and it ultimately benefits their business by enhancing the business reputation.
Finn O’Boyle, PMP Programme Manager, Axa Partners has been managing large business projects and programs for the past 10 years and been with AXA and formerly Genworth for the past 7 years. Originally an enthusiastic IT programmer, he has worked in consumer goods, public sector, consulting and financial services on different projects focusing mainly on business process design and change management with all functions. He has been leading the AXA Partners CLP GDPR programme since February 2017.
Paul O’Brien, Managing Director, CalQRisk is a co-founder of CalQRisk, Paul has extensive business experience managing multinational companies at operations, general management, and director levels. He has implemented operational excellence programmes at division level and is an expert in management by objectives. He has driven the integration of complex acquisitions on three continents. Paul is an instinctive risk assessor, with a specialty in the alignment of business objectives with the risk context. “Taking a risk-based approach to achieving and maintaining GDPR is expected by the regulator – achieve compliance by managing the risks to the data subject and to the business.”
