Limerick Chamber Skillnet & UL Partner in First Management Qualification for Hairdressing Industry – It’s envisioned that students who successfully complete the certificate level programme will continue their education with pathways to the Diploma in Management (Level 7) and Bachelor of Arts in Management Practice (Level 8) available through the University of Limerick.

Limerick Chamber Skillnet, in collaboration with Synergy Hairdressing Group, has partnered with the University of Limerick; with the aim of bringing their Certificate in Management programme to the hairdressing industry – the first formal qualification in management available to hairdressers in Ireland.

In 2014, Synergy Hairdressing Group approached Limerick Chamber Skillnet seeking support in the development of a management training programme for its members.

“Synergy is a dynamic group of creative and like-minded hairdressing professionals. We strive to provide affordable education and professional development opportunities to members and their staff,” explains Noreen Ryan, Synergy Chairperson.

“We want to empower hairdressers to deliver best-in-class services and feedback from members indicated that learning in management skills, processes and protocols are of the utmost importance in their professional and personal development.”

This September, a group of 23 senior stylists, salon managers and salon owners from across the Munster region commenced the programme, which will see them undertake ten management modules over the course of the year.

Modules cover a variety of management topics, such as communications, time management, managing performance, employee relations, grievance and disciplinary practices, quality management, responsibility and accountability, interview skills, managing change and conflict, feedback skills, motivation, delegation and much more.

“We’ve worked closely with the University of Limerick and Synergy Hairdressing Group to ensure module content addresses the culture and needs of the hair industry,” explains Anne Morris, Network Manager at Limerick Chamber Skillnet.

“Traditionally, hairdressers have access to processional, industry-specific education through various colleges and institutes across Ireland; however, this is the first university qualification available for managers, or aspiring managers, in the hairdressing industry with course materials tailored to the specific sector,” she adds.

Next autumn, upon successful completion of the programme, students will graduate with a Certificate in Management, NFQ Level 6 Minor Award from the University of Limerick.

“Our goal is to transform ambitious professionals into management leaders,” says Yvonne Delaney, Programmes Director & Unit Head of the Management Development Unit at the Kemmy Business School in UL.

“Our learners are accomplished professionals pursuing success in a variety of industries; the hairdressing students are amongst 400 students pursuing a qualification in Management with the Management Development Unit at the Kemmy Business School.”
