The Limerick Choral Festival 2017 takes place on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th, and Sunday 5th March next, at the Augustinians, Redemptorists, St. Joseph’s Church, and Sacred Heart Church. Adjudicators for the event will be Prof. Helen Phelan (Limerick) and Mr Kevin O’Carroll (Waterford).

Among the Limerick choirs taking part will be the Cór Chríst Rí (Caherdavin), Limerick Gospel Choir, Sacred Heart Church Choir, and Cantate Deo (St. Michael’s). They will be joined by several school groups such as Thomond Primary School, Parteen N.S. Kildimo National School. Augmented by choirs from Clare, Galway, Waterford, Kilkenny, Offaly, Dublin, Cork, and Tipperary, a total contingent of over 40 choirs will make up this year’s event – performing a variety of choral pieces ranging from church/sacred music, gospel to early music and various contemporary compositions of all types.

One of the highlights of this Limerick Choral Festival 2017 activities will be the Opening Concert to take place on Friday 3rd March at 8:00 pm in St Joseph’s Church, O’Connell Avenue, where The Curraghgower Singers (under the direction of Timothy Schinnick) will be joined by students from Maoin Cheoil an Chláir (Ennis) to give a combined performance of traditional Irish music, religious songs in the Irish tradition, sacred-secular choral music and folk songs from different countries of the world. This is an evening not to be missed and admission is free (with a retiring donation to help defray the costs of the festival).

Another significant event will be the Closing Concert in Sacred Heart Church (The Crescent) on Sunday, 5th March (5pm) when The Lassus Scholars from Dublin, directed by Dr Ite O’Donovan, will perform a sequence of motets and chants for Holy Week/Easter, including Allegri ‘Miserere’- along with compositions by Victoria, Palestrina, Lassus, Philips & Mawby. There will also be several organ pieces performed during the concert by guest organist, Dr Paul McKeever. Promises to be a wonderful evening of sacred polyphony and organ masterworks! Again, admission is free – but a retiring donation would be most appreciated.

The organisers of the Limerick Choral Festival 2017 expressed their deep appreciation to all those who have actively supported this year’s event or assisted in any way to make up such a significant programme of events. All competitions and associated events over the festival weekend are open to the general public, so do please come along and enjoy the wonderful singing.
