Limerick Choral Festival 2018 to bring over 40 choirs to the City

The 2018 annual Limerick Choral Festival takes place throughout this month, March 2018, at the Redemptorists, St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Michael’s Church (Denmark Street), St. John’s Cathedral, and Sacred Heart Church (The Crescent). Adjudicators for the event will be Mark Keane from Galway and Limerick’s own Máire Keary-Scanlon.

Among the Limerick choirs taking part will be the Limerick Educate Together NS Choir, Thomond Primary School Choir, Crecora N.S. Choir, Limerick Gospel Choir, and Sacred Heart Church Choir. Augmented by choirs from Clare, Galway, Kilkenny, Mayo, Offaly, Dublin, Cork, and Tipperary, a total contingent of over 40 choirs will make up this year’s event – performing a variety of choral pieces ranging from church/sacred music, gospel to early music and various contemporary compositions of all types.

One of the highlights of this year’s activities will be the Opening Concert, which has been postponed until Friday, 23rd of March at 8pm in St. John’s Cathedral, where the acapella group ‘Ardú Vocal Ensemble’ from Dublin (under the direction of Ciarán Kelly) will be joined by ‘Limerick Chamber Choir’ (director Máire Keary-Scanlon) to give an unmissable performance of sacred and secular choral music. This an evening not to be missed and tickets (€15/€12 concessions) can be purchased online at www.litmt.ie and at the door (doors open at 7:30 pm).

The Closing Concert in Sacred Heart Church (The Crescent) on Sunday, 4th March (5 pm) has, unfortunately, been cancelled due to the fact that the 80 members of the Hudson High School choir have been left stranded at Heathrow airport and will not arrive in Limerick in time for the concert.

Dr Michael O’Brien, President of Limerick Choral Festival Society expresses his deep appreciation to all those who have actively supported this year’s event or assisted in any way to make up such a significant programme of events. He also expressed his enthusiasm by saying ‘we are really looking forward to a wonderful weekend of choral music of the highest standards. It’s also wonderful this year to have both cathedrals on board’.

All competitions and associated events will go ahead on March 9-10 and are open to the general public, so do please come along and enjoy the wonderful singing. You are invited to like Limerick Choral Festival on Facebook to keep abreast of all the latest news and developments.
