58 choirs to play at Limerick Choral Festival 2020

Limerick Choral Festival 2020 takes place from Friday, February 28, until Sunday, March 1 at Mount St. Alphonsus, the Augustinian Church, St. Joseph’s Church, St. Michael’s Church (Denmark Street) and Sacred Heart Church (The Crescent). Esteemed adjudicators for the weekend event will be Ms. Bernie Sherlock (Dublin) and Dr. Kevin O’Carroll (Waterford).

Among the Limerick choirs taking part will be the Limerick Educate Together NS Choir, Thomond Primary School Choir, St. Brigid’s N.S. Choir, Ancór, Limerick Gospel Choir, and St. John’s Cathedral Choir. Augmented by choirs from Clare, Galway, Sligo, Kilkenny, Waterford, Donegal, Mayo, Offaly, Dublin, Cork, and Tipperary, a total contingent of 58 choirs will make up this year’s event – performing a variety of choral pieces ranging from church/sacred music, gospel to early music and various contemporary compositions of all types.

One of the highlights of this year’s activities will be the Opening Concert which will take place on Friday, February 28 at 8.00 pm in St. Joseph’s Church (O’Connell Ave.), where Aoide Voices Community Choir (Limerick), under the direction of Owen Gilhooly, will join both the Limerick Chamber Choir and County Limerick Youth Choir, under the direction of Máire Keary-Scanlon, for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of wonderful choral treats. Tickets are €15/€10 and can be bought on the door. Doors open at 7.30 pm.

Another significant event will be the Closing Organ Concert in Sacred Heart Church (The Crescent) on Sunday, March 1 at 5.00 pm, by renowned organist Dr. David O’Shea from Dublin. Admission is free – but a retiring donation would be most appreciated.

Dr. Michael O’Brien, President of Limerick Choral Festival Society has expressed his deep appreciation to all those who have actively supported this year’s event or helped in any way to make up such a significant programme of events.

All competitions and associated events over the festival weekend are open to the general public, so do come along and enjoy the wonderful singing.
