Limerick City Waterfront scores €2.7 million in funding

Limerick City Waterfront scores €2.7 million in funding. An ambitious plan is being developed for a new pedestrian bridge at the heart of the city centre.

The funding has been put in place by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to develop the pedestrian bridge. Last week the Taoiseach allocated €6.2 million for the regeneration plans in Limerick.

The specific location of the bridge has not been decided yet, with the suggestion of a bridge from Arthur’s Quay to King John’s Castle surfacing.

The Limerick Metropolitan Area has been allocated 6% of the total funding made available nationwide.

As well as the world-class waterfront project, the funding will allow for other strategically important projects such as the O’Connell Street Redevelopment, Opera House, Limerick’s Living Georgian City and a virtual reality centre.

The virtual reality centre and limerick’s Living Georgian City have received €2.7 million each in funding.

The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr James Collins said: “The funding is another vote of confidence in Limerick and the Limerick 2030 Economic and Spatial Plan as we continue to redevelop Limerick City Centre. These are projects, which are going to transform Limerick in the years to come.  All of these projects will hopefully encourage more private investors to look again at the potential of Limerick’’.

The funding is part of the government’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), which was established to support more compact and sustainable development, through the regeneration and rejuvenation of Ireland’s five cities and other large towns. The fund is in line with the objectives of the National Planning Framework and the National Development Plan.

It aims to our urban areas into more attractive and vibrant locations to live, work, invest and learn within. It also strives to develop better housing and commercial property within the existing blueprint of our cities and towns.
