Limerick Combat Gym is set to host the National WKO Low Kick & Low Kick Light Championships on September 6, with pre-registration open now

Limerick will become the centre of kickboxing in Ireland this September as the Limerick Combat Gym is set to host the World Kickboxing Organisation (WKO) All-Ireland Low Kick & Low Kick Light Championships which will see competitors from across Ireland and beyond in the city.
The open championships will see competitors from age 7 and up, including a veteran division for fighters over the age of 40 take part in the tournament held at Limerick Combat Gym.
A pre-registration only event, in partnership with WKO Ireland, registration is open now until Wednesday, August 20, with no entries accepted on the day.
“It’s a big thing for the local kids,” Tony O’Donnell of Limerick Combat Gym told I Love Limerick, saying, “ It’s bringing the best in the country into Limerick, and it’s an open championship, so you’ll have guys coming from England, Wales, Scotland, and we’ll have the local lads competing too.”
Tony, a seven-time Kickboxing Champion said the event is an opportunity for the younger kids who he proudly says “are the future” of Limerick. Tony said, “For me, that’s the future of Limerick. And we fought so hard to keep that hall open. The history there is unreal.”
Speaking about how Limerick Combat Gym is more than just the sport, he continued, “It gives the kids something to do and some people to look up to. We’ve gotten kids apprenticeships, and we’ve got them back to school.
“Just to watch a kid that’s never been told he’s any good at anything and doesn’t expect to do anything in his life, just to be told he’s good at something – to see the smile on his face is just unreal.”
Spectators can attend the tournament for €10, and fighters must have full regulation gear, including 10oz gloves, proper shin guards, padded headguards, t-shirts, and handwraps. Clubs are limited to two coaches each, and all participants must follow WKO rules.
The event is a same day weigh-ins tournament with fighters coming in over, being moved up to the next category. Weigh-ins open 9:30 am and close at 10:00 am with the first bout to begin at 11 am. The competition is broken down into age and weight categories and pre-registration is open now and abailable online.
