Limerick City and County Council has announced the allocation of over €1.4 million for the refurbishment and renovation of 19 community centres throughout the county.

The funding, part of a nationwide initiative announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary, which saw more than €26 million for community centres across Ireland, will support 19 community centres in Limerick.

Making the announcement, Minister Calleary said, “Community Centres are the lifeblood of our communities. They play host to some of our most important occasions, in good times and in bad. Again in recent weeks we have seen the importance of these centres for their local communities as many of them became emergency hubs in the aftermath of storm Éowyn.

“The funding that my department provides under the Community Centre Investment Fund will empower these communities to continue to provide that much needed communal space.”

Limerick City and County Council welcomed the funding, which they say will significantly improve the facilities and support the ongoing development of vibrant, inclusive communities.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented, “This is really an investment in our local communities and it recognises the importance of community centres in bringing communities together.  This funding will ensure improvement works so that these centres remain welcoming and functional spaces for all residents.”

Príomh Comhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Dan McSweeney, highlighted the broader impact of the funding saying it will enhance physical infrastructure and will “also strengthen the social fabric of our communities”.

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly added, “This is a significant investment by the government, supporting local communities and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. The allocation of these funds will allow communities to upgrade facilities, making them more accessible and better equipped to serve the diverse needs of local residents.”
