Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team is continuing to roll out new cycling infrastructure across Limerick
Two new mini sweepers are to be deployed on Limerick’s cycling network as part of the Council’s efforts to keep cycle lanes clear of rubbish and debris.
The delivery of the Limerick cycle lane sweepers comes at a time when Limerick City and County Council’s Active Travel team is continuing to roll out new cycling infrastructure across Limerick.
In the past year alone, Active Travel has installed new segregated cycle lanes at locations including Dooradoyle Road, Groody Road, St Nessan’s Road and Childers Road.
The size of the new sweepers makes them ideal for fitting into the segregated cycle lanes at these locations, and elsewhere.
Director of Service for Transportation and Mobility at Limerick City and County Council, Brian Kennedy said: “Delivering new cycling infrastructure is only one part of the Active Travel story, we also need to ensure that our cycle network is serviceable. These two new mini sweepers, funded by the National Transport Authority, will be deployed as part of a regular schedule of cleaning and maintenance.”
Sean McGlynn, Senior Engineer in Active Travel said: “I am delighted to finally see the new sweepers arrive and get to work. The new sweepers will endeavour to keep our new cycle lanes and cycleways clear of rubbish and debris and safe for cyclists.”
The Active Travel team at Limerick City and County Council, with funding from the National Transport Authority, is transforming Limerick’s cycling and walking network. This partnership with the NTA will deliver a high-quality, accessible and connected network of cycleways and pedestrian routes.
Active Travel is very simple, it is about getting more of us out of our cars and using more sustainable transport modes like cycling and walking as part of a purposeful journey. To achieve this, Limerick City and County Council, in partnership with the National Transport Authority plans to expand and improve our cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.
