The Limerick South City Residents Association held many table quizzes and fundraises to raise funds for the defibrillator to be put in place and after an attempt of vandalism the front glass of the machine was smashed so the device had to be taken away and fixed.

“We replaced the box and we upgraded the defibrillator, so now it’s back,” spoke Jerry O’Connell, chairman of the South City Residents Association.

Speaking of the incident whereby the defibrillator was damaged in January 2018, Gerry O’Connell said it was a “senseless” act.

The residents’ association held a variety of fundraising events to pay for the defibrillator back in 2013. Defibrillators are life-saving pieces of equipment, that can cost thousands of euro to get put in place.

The defibrillator located at the side of Sullivan’s Pharmacy, O’Connell Avenue is the only one on the street. However, the Limerick South City Residents Association have high intentions of getting another one put on the street in the near future.

By this stage, most people on the street know the code to open the device, “It’s a simple device when opened it will show you exactly what to do,” remarked Gerry O’Connell of the South City Residents Association.

In an opportunity to further hone the skills of the general public, and increase the awareness of the citizens of South Limerick City, there will be a number of courses carried out by the Red Cross in the coming weeks at a reduced cost.
