Limerick District Soccer League (LDSL) is fundraising for its Under 14 Girls team ahead of a “once in a lifetime” trip to Spain in April, which will see the squad become the first ever competitive girls tea mto travel abroad.

Setting a goal of €4,500, the club has already raised more than €3,200 ahead of the April trip, with organisers saying they are “incredibly proud” to be fundraising for the ground-breaking team.

Organisers said, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these young athletes to represent Limerick, compete against international opposition, and experience football at a new level. This team are the reigning Gaynor Cup champions and brought such excitement to the city last summer when they became the first Limerick District team to win the Gaynor Cup.”

The fundraiser has been set up to help with the costs that come with travelling as a group and taking part in competitions. The funraising page reads, “Travelling abroad as a team comes with significant costs, and we want to ensure that every player has the chance to participate, regardless of financial circumstances. Your support will help make this historic trip possible.”

The funds raised will go towards covering essential costs of the trip such as flights and accommodation; tournament entry fees; ground transportation; training, kits, and equipment; as well as insurance and associated travel costs.

Thankful for the support so far, the organisers say that “every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to Spain and helps support the continued growth of girls’ football in the Limerick District”.

LDSL see the trip as being about more than football, saying it will be “making history for girls’ soccer in Limerick”.

They also added that it will promote teamwork, resilience, and confidence as well as “giving young players international experience and inspiration”.

They close out thir call for help, saying, “Thank you for supporting the LDSL U14 Girls as they prepare to represent Limerick on the international stage. From Limerick to Spain — Go LDSL U14 Girls!”
