I hosted a spectacular multicultural food, music, dance and arts family event called ‘Limerick Divercity’ on Tuesday April 8 at Limerick Institute of Technology in the Aula Maxima hall. The Limerick Divercity event was a celebration of the diversity and community spirit to be found in Limerick as City of Culture 2014. No need to hop on a plane to discover the world and celebrate cultural differences when you can come to see various ethnic performances such as Brazilian Capoeira Martial Art, a Chinese Lion Dance, a Nepalese Rock band, the Latvian children folk dance “Taurenitis” along with Indian, Polish and Russian performances. There was also be an arts exhibition and international food stands. It was be a family day with children’s activities in the form of face painting, henna tattoo and workshops with an opportunity to win a great prize in a children’s art competition. The event was presented by LIT 2nd year Event Management Students with all funds raised going to support Doras Luimni, who support and promote the rights of all migrants living in Limerick and the wider Mid-West region.  See www.facebook.com/LimerickDivercity2014.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
