Limerick City East Educate Together National School is one of just 15 schools in Ireland to be in the running for one of nine prestigious Our World Awards comprising the Global Goals, Irish Aid Programme, Rising Star, Creative Star, STEM, School and Community Impact, Global Citizenship Education, an Iontráil Ghaeilge is Fearr and Outstanding School Engagement Awards, as well as the coveted School of the Year Award.
The pupils at Limerick City East Educate Together National School made it to the as a result of their ambitious and highly creative project addressing the global challenge of flooding in Laos.
Drawing on science, technology, engineering, and the arts, the class developed a wide range of innovative solutions and educational materials to raise awareness and propose practical ideas for communities affected by flooding. The project was entirely pupil-led, with the full class divided into sub-groups, each focusing on a different aspect of the issue.
From StopMotion animations and dramatic performances to 3D pen creations, Lego engineering models, a podcast, and educational leaflets, the pupils explored the issue from every angle. Other groups tackled agriculture, diorama construction, technology design, and scientific research, ensuring a cross-curricular approach that brought learning to life in a hands-on and meaningful way.
A highlight of their work will be presented at the National Finals at Dublin Castle on May 30th, where the pupils will showcase some of their Lego models and 3D pen inventions to other finalist schools and visitors. Their inventive work not only highlights global challenges but demonstrates how Irish pupils can think critically and creatively about real-world issues — and propose solutions.
The judges praised the scale and depth of the project, as well as the huge effort and collaboration shown by both pupils and teachers. The project exemplifies how global citizenship education can empower students to connect classroom learning with international development and take action for a better world.
