Limerick F.C.’s Double Club Programme benefits Limerick’s youth community through the club’s positive development and educational work that they carry out in areas around Limerick. In particular focusing on areas that are deemed under-privileged and who are experiencing on-going social issues, the club and its team have formulated an incredible educational programme for the young people of these areas.

The Double Club programme involves tackling the high levels of numeracy and literacy issues through the use of sporting designed booklets and resources. Pat O’Sullivan, Club Chairman of Limerick F.C. tells me, “Here at the club, we do our best to try and bridge the social gap through sport. It is vitally important for us to create a sense of friendship, trust and confidence with the young people we work with.” Pat also tells me about the strong ties that the programme holds with some of the London Premiership clubs, in particular Arsenal F.C. Arsenal F.C. have been working with the Community Development in Hackney for the past 30 years and have also been dealing with social issues that are affecting the young people of the area.

Pat works alongside Barry Lynch, the Double Club co-ordinator as well as Fr. Pat Hogan, Tiernan O’Neill, Principal of Corpus Christi, Moyross and Limerick Institute of Technology in mentoring the young people and ensuring they have the best educational opportunities possible. The aim of the club and this fantastic educational programme is ultimately to use sport as an academic tool, where the youth can approach these numeracy and literacy issues through a medium which is familiar and of interest to them. Taking on this work that Pat feels “state agencies couldn’t do”, he asks these groups to support the programme rather than see it as a threat and to recognise the programme as a strong, positive initiative in educating the young people of Limerick.

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
