Limerick Figure Drawing Society present “Life Lines: An Exhibition of Life Drawing” December 3

The Limerick Figure Drawing Society invites you to the opening of “Life Lines: An Exhibition of Life Drawing” on Thursday 3rd December 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Buildings Gallery located at 51 O’Connell Street (next to the Whitehouse Bar).

An exhibition of the work of the Limerick Figure Drawing Society will be opened by Úna McCarthy, Director of the Limerick City Gallery of Art on Thursday 3rd December 6pm, at Central Buildings Gallery located at 51 O’Connell Street (next to the Whitehouse Bar). The show will continue daily until Sunday 13th December. This is a unique opportunity to view a collection of figurative art by local artists using a variety of artistic mediums including charcoal, pencil, ink, watercolour and oils.

In addition, the LFDS will host two “Portrait Circles”, at which people take turns drawing and sitting to be drawn for 20 minutes. The first will be on Saturday 5 December, 3­5 p.m., and the second will take place on Thursday, 10 December from 7­9 p.m.

Study of the human form by visual artists dates back to antiquity and has always
been considered one of the most difficult subjects to master. Life drawing fell out of favour for a time when the emphasis of contemporary art moved from the representational to the conceptual. However, a recent surge in the value of and popularity of life drawing has created a demand with artists who are interested in working with live models.

The Limerick Figure Drawing Society was started in 2011 by Mark Heng. A painting graduate from Boston University, he realised that there were years of practice required to attain
some degree of mastery in drawing the human figure. Luckily, there were others who agreed and joined with him to split the cost of hiring models. With no available venue the weekly life drawing sessions took place in Mark’s garage until they found a space in the City Centre through the Creative Limerick initiative.

In 2013 the society had grown considerably, so with the support of the UL Arts office, the artists started meeting in Dromroe Village Hall on the University campus and continue to meet there on Tuesday evenings.

The Society continues to flourish with members from diverse artistic and professional backgrounds and age groups. Interestingly, a number of the members are past students of Limerick School of Art and Design, who studied under the late Jack Donovan.

Society members will be in invigilating. So anyone wanting more information on the exhibition or anyone interested in joining the society is welcome to visit and admission is free.
