Limerick filmmaker Sophie Hogan begins ‘Eat Your Words’ production
Limerick filmmaker Sophie Hogan has begun shooting her debut feature film ‘Eat Your Words’, which she describes as being a “very personal story” for her

Limerick filmmaker Sophie Hogan is currently shooting ‘Eat Your Words’, set to be a 40-minute-long coming-of-age, horror feature, boasting a team of emerging filmmakers and local talent. The film uses claustrophobic settings, dark locations and sharp twists to tell a story of toxic masculinity at its most extreme levels.
The film follows Evan, a troubled young man with behavioural issues, who finds himself faced with a moral dilemma upon discovering his father is hiding a deranged secret from him.
Sophie Hogan commented on why she’s making this film saying, “I grew up with a father who always preached the ‘what makes a man’ mentality and I saw the consequences of this from a very young age. I feel like this film is very important to the younger generation as the reality is not everyone does as they preach and everyone suffers from others mentalities, whether they realise it or not.”
The film is produced by Limerick based filmmaker Jonty Ross, who is a former finalist of Limerick’s Fresh International Film Festival.
Quote from Jonty Ross about the film: “Working on this film so far has been incredible. I feel this sort of film is a standout. You don’t usually see such films getting made in Limerick and getting to work with a team which mostly consists of Limerick talent has been a real dream come true. It’s brilliant getting to showcase Limerick’s filmmaking scene and I feel this film is proof you don’t need to leave Limerick to tell a powerful story”.
Of the cast, the film features several Limerick based actors in leading and supporting roles, including Matthew Hogan as the troublesome Evan Callahan and Philip Coffey, who has previously starred in ‘The Wandering’ and ‘Into the Badlands’, as Vincent, Evan’s violent and short tempered father.

The supporting cast features Lonan Ross, who recently appeared as a Rowdy Teen in David Gleeson’s ‘Once Upon a Time in a Cinema’, musical artist Ciara Hennessy, also known as Itsjusthera, and Galway actress Linda Breslin.
Filming began in Annacotty on the 11th of May and is set to continue production in Limerick City from the 22nd onto the end of May. The tight budget has allowed the crew to get creative in the most experimental ways possible, from lighting to set design & schedule to create a unique, one of a kind feel to this project. ‘Eat Your Words’ is a promising feature debut by Sophie Hogan and also proves that with a dedicated crew and strong story, you can create something powerful in your local community.
