The purpose of this early-stage consultation event is to give interested parties an overview of the project, to offer them the opportunity to engage with the project team and tell their experiences of flooding in Limerick City and its environs and offer views on how the scheme should progress.

The City and Environs Limerick Flood Relief Scheme is led by Limerick City and County Council working in partnership with the OPW with funding provided through the National Development Plan 2021-2030.

Due to current Covid-19 risks, this Initial Public Consultation event will primarily take place via an online forum.

Limerick City has been a victim of severe flooding many times in the past. Previous flooding events in the Limerick city area have caused millions of euros worth of damage. Flooding in Limerick is caused by both fluvial (stream/river) and coastal sources.

The objective of the scheme is to alleviate the risk of flooding by providing a scheme that is technically, socially, environmentally and economically acceptable.

Due to current Covid-19 risks, this Initial Public Consultation event will primarily take place via an online forum.

The development of the public realm is a major component of the Flood Relief Scheme. Where feasible, greenways and pedestrian/ cycle routes will be developed in conjunction with the flood defence and where appropriate, nature-based solutions and green infrastructure will be incorporated into the scheme.

Feedback from the public consultation process will be included in the Constraints assessment for the scheme and considered as part of further appraisal leading to the identification of the scheme options and determination of the preferred scheme option.  This, in turn, will form the basis for a further public consultation, which is expected to take place in July 2023, following identification of the preferred scheme option.

The areas included in the broader Limerick City and Environs Flood Relief Scheme include City Centre Quays, Thomondgate, Corbally, Annacotty, Montpelier, The Docklands, Condell Road, Ballinacurra, Rosbrien, Ballysimon, Old Cratloe Road and Westbury and Shannon Banks.

It will also include public realm elements of the URDF-funded Worldclass Waterfront project and the consideration of greenways and blueways along the Shannon and Dooradoyle.

Separate schemes are being progressed for King’s Island, Castleconnell, Adare and Athea.
