Limerick Fridays for Future Protest in Arthurs Quay Park to take place September 23
The Fridays for Future Limerick group have made their motive clear in a series of past popular protests.

Limerick Fridays for Future are organising a climate protest on Friday, September 23 from 12pm to 2pm in Arthurs Quay Park. This is the first climate change protest to take place in Limerick in nearly three years.

Fridays For Future is a youth-led climate strike movement that started in August 2018 inspired by Greta Thunberg. This led to an international movement of activists, particularly students fighting for changes to be made to save the environment.

The Limerick group are the first of the Fridays for Future groups to register their Climate Strike on the European Day of Sustainable Communities (EDSC) calendar. EDSC takes place on September 17, however, events such as the Fridays for Future September protest in Limerick will take place throughout the month across Europe to celebrate.

In September 2019, over one thousand people showed up in Limerick to strike for climate action as part of a Global Climate Strike. Led by local young Fridays for Future climate activists, Limerick’s citizens expressed their concern about the global climate emergency. Around the world, almost 7.5 million people took part in similar strikes that day. Despite this, despite several global strikes in the past year, and despite scientists’ warnings and worldwide evidence, the job of change isn’t done – urgent change is still needed.

The climate crisis is one of the, if not the biggest, crises to face humankind. It means the systemic destruction of the animals and plants that make up our environment and are critical to the survival of the human race.

The World Wide Fund for Nature estimates that one million species of animals and plants will become extinct within the next couple of decades. The youth of Limerick have decided that now is the time to act.

Fridays for Future and Communities for Future are encouraging everyone of all ages to take part in this years protest in Arthurs Quay Park and make their voice heard.
