Limerick Gardai virtual torch run to support Special Olympics Ireland

Ten Limerick-based Gardai have teamed up to take part in the 2020 Law Enforcement Torch Run which aims to raise €10,000 for Special Olympics Ireland.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is the largest public awareness fundraiser for the Special Olympics. Annually, more than 110,000 dedicated and compassionate law enforcement members carry the ‘Flame of Hope’, symbolizing courage and celebrating diversity.

Typically the Torch Run takes place at the Opening ceremony of local competitions, provincial, national, regional, and World Games, however, due to Covid-19 many Special Olympic events have been cancelled or postponed and so holding a fundraiser like this is very important for fundraising to help the Special Olympics continue to offer their life-changing help.  

This virtual event, which kicked off on September 7 and will continue until September 20, will see ten brave teams from ten stations across the Gardai Siochana and PSNI run a combined all Ireland circuit of 2,800km.

The organising committee agreed to run the fundraising event, instead of the usual ‘Cops and Donuts’ events which cannot go ahead due to the current Covid-19 restrictions.

By stepping up to this challenge the Garda Síochána and the PSNI are ensuring that Special Olympics Ireland can continue to provide its life-changing services to people with an intellectual disability in local communities and help spread the word about inclusion, hope, and determination, and the wonderful friendship between An Garda Síochána /PSNI and Special Olympics Ireland.


At the launch of the Limerick Gardai virtual torch run fundraising event, Chief Superintendent Roche praised those involved, saying, “I am very proud of the effort put in by Garda Michael Howard and his fellow Intake 192 Probationers, their support and engagement with Special Olympics Ireland means a lot to An Garda Síochána during these difficult times for voluntary community and sports organisations. Members of AN Garda Síochána in Limerick and indeed across the country hold a special place in our hearts for the work and impact of the Special Olympics in the lives of the communities we serve.”
