Limerick Gateway to Education (LGTE) is an education support charity based on Wickham Street in Limerick. The main aim of LGTE is to make education more affordable for Limerick-based families. Founder, Suzanne Roche commented on how the charity has, “blossomed into something more than what I had ever expected,” and speaks of how the charity has been “very lucky in the sense that it is all volunteer-run.”

Limerick Gateway to Education has its own shop at 9 Wickham Street, Limerick. The shop provides recycled school essentials in order to alleviate the cost for parents at back to school time. LGTE is also running a homework club where they support primary children through their mentorship programme supported by volunteers from the University of Limerick. Limerick Gateway to Education provides a learning hub where they offer support to adults who are referred through various agencies to sign up to their training programme to allow them to improve their job prospects at our base at 1 The Tait business Centre, Dominic Street Limerick.

Jennifer O’Carroll, non-exec Board Member for Limerick Gateway to Education told ilovelimerick about the auction “A number of items of high value have been donated due to very nice donations from people recently, because of that we decided in order to raise more funds on the night we would organise an auction where those particular items would be auctioned off. We are hoping that will contribute further to the cause and to helping all the kids with back to school with summer looming.” The auction is free of charge.

Limerick Gateway to Education hosted a quiz and auction night to help raise funds to allow them to continue all three projects mentioned above. The event took place on Thursday, May 23 at Bobby Byrnes pub.

Jennifer continued, “We are hoping that the money raised on the night by the auction, a raffle and the contribution through the quiz will all go towards funding the work that they do, which is making sure donations are received when it comes to the use of books in order to be able to allow for second hand, reused and discounted books to be given to people who might be struggling to pay for the full price of books which can be very expensive.”

LGTE have also been doing work to relieve some costs of school uniforms by getting badges or crests made for schools that participate in the programme.

The auction will begin at 7.30 pm followed by the quiz at 8.30 pm with Jennifer as the quiz master. For further information contact 061 481633.
