Dolan’s Upstairs, regular home to Jazz Society and guests, is the venue. Look forward to career musicians and teachers of music leading these accomplished groups. These groups will each have a repertoire to entertain.

“We are starting off at 7 pm as we have so many on stage,” explains John Daly of LJS and the Peter Dee Academy of Music. “First up on stage is the Junior Jazz Ensemble followed by six adult ensembles playing a wide variety of jazz tunes expect experienced names such as Peter Hanagan on bass, John Daly, percussion and Steve Hanks on sax leading two ensembles”.

Multi-instrumentalist Bryan Meehan leads another couple, and guitarist Joe O’Callaghan is working with his ensemble and jazz singers Trio.

To date this has been a phenomenal success mainly due to the vision & hard work done by founder Ed Hansom Saxophone) & great teaching staff.

Finger food served and just €5 in.

Workshops

Limerick Jazz Workshop meets on Tuesday evenings at Learning Hub Limerick in Kileely and students are organised in ensembles under the guidance of expert teachers. Each session involves the students developing their skills by learning and performing some of the great standards in the jazz repertoire. There are also three specialist classes for singers, beginners and a little big band with more emphasis on reading than improvising.

The main ensemble classes run from 7.45pm to 9.45pm. The specialist classes run from 6.45pm to 7.45pm.

They do their best to accommodate younger performers. However, sometimes dependent on having sufficient numbers to have a dedicated class for them.

They regularly perform in public as part of the course in Dolans and other city venues. Their ensembles have supported performers such as Des Bishop and the Soweto Gospel Choir at the University Concert Hall, Limerick. They have also appeared on the main stage at Africa Day in City Hall.
