Last week saw the launch of Mini Saga Superstars by Limerick JCSP students. 36 students from 6 Limerick schools were celebrating at the book launch of their fabulous book “Min Saga Superstars!” with celebrity guest actor and playwright, Limericks own Myles Breen.

The book was compiled and edited by Jane Bingham-Shee who is the school librarian at St Nessan’s Community College Limerick. The book stemmed from an outreach project organised by the librarian to encourage Limerick students to enjoy creative writing. The students were challenged to write a mini saga which is a complete story in only 50 words. The students responded with intriguing sagas that were a mixture of poignant, funny, historical and sometimes terrifying tales!  The librarian chose the best stories and brilliant Limerick artist Hugh McMahon illustrated each of these for the book.  The result is a fascinating and exciting mixture of beautifully illustrated tales for all to enjoy.

The Junior Certificate Schools Programme provides the school with a framework to ensure the students enjoy positive experiences of the Junior Cycle through a creative, achievable broad based curriculum and of course provide them with the skills to go on to achieve success in the Junior Certificate Exam. St Nessans run many JCSP initiatives which support literacy and numeracy such as D.E.A.R, maths quiz, make a book, film making, reading challenge and who wants to be a word millionaire. The students receive a certificate of participation at the end of each initiative. The programme is fantastic and helps the students develop positive self esteem and belonging and also improves their skills.
