Limerick Lightshow consists of a spectacular 4-storey high
lightshow which is set to bring the spirit of Christmas to life in Limerick City Centre in the coming weeks.

Limerick City and County Council says the two-minute long, 3D illumination show will be projected onto the façade of the iconic Penneys department store on O’Connell Street from 5pm to midnight each day from Tuesday 8 December to Wednesday 23 December.

The illumination is part of Limerick’s extensive Christmas offering, which features a wide-ranging programme of events taking place across the City during the festive period.

“The show which is approximately 2 minutes in length will bring one of the most iconic buildings on Limerick’s main thoroughfare to life with festive animations and spectacular seasonal surprises,” explained Mary Hayes, economic development officer with Limerick City and County Council.

She added, “We hope that the illumination will add vibrancy and animate the city, lending to the festive atmosphere. In the run up to Christmas, seating and street food kiosks will be installed in the urban garden to the front of Penneys while local bands will also play each Saturday.”

Mike Fitzpatrick, Director of Limerick 2020 commented: “3D projection video mapping and building projection have now become fused into a new art form that allows public spaces to be turned into stunning video canvases. This illumination, which has been designed specifically for this site, will certainly grab the attention of passersby and will enhance the experience of visitors to the city over the coming weeks.”

‘Christmas In Limerick’ kicked off on November 15 with the switching on of the Christmas lights followed by ‘Celebrating Christmas in Limerick – The City of Fashion’. The programme continues in the coming weeks with ‘Limerick on Ice’ at Arthur’s Quay Park, ‘Enchanted by Franc, a Medieval Christmas Experience at King John’s Castle’ and the Christmas Racing Festival at Limerick Racecourse.

The programme also features live music and comedy performances, Christmas carol concerts, pantos, kiddies workshops, theatre, and festive food events such as the annual Christmas Markets.
