The Limerick Marine Search and Rescue are currently accepting applications from members of the public who would like to become volunteers with them.

Their ideal candidate is aged over 18, living or working locally, a competent swimmer, will pass the Rescue Service medical, has a clean driving license, keen to learn new skills (training will be provided), and enjoys working in a team.

The unit is comprised of highly dedicated and committed volunteers who give their free time to helping those in difficulty in rivers and lakes.

The primary focus of the unit is to respond to Search and Rescue missions from both the Irish Coast Guard and the Munster Regional Fire Control Centre.

For these search and Rescue missions, volunteers often work alongside and support a number of resources such as the Irish Coast Guard Resources, such as the IRCG Rescue helicopter based in Shannon Airport and other IRCG units, the Garda and Fire and Ambulance services.

Limerick Marine Search and Rescue was established in 1986 by Jimmy Connors and Tony Cusack who were both sports divers at the time. They were asked to help search for a young boy who had lost his life in the waters of Parteen. The two men decided afterwards that there was a necessity for a Marine, Search and Rescue unit in Limerick. Following a meeting on December 6, 1986, in Ger Fahey’s bar on the Dock Road (now Dolans), Limerick Marine Search and Rescue was established.

The organisation has grown from that initial meeting to a full-blown headquarters at Atlas Avenue on the Dock Road housing state-of-the-art equipment to help keep the people of Limerick safe in unpredictable waters. It also holds pontoons along the waters of Limerick equipped with boats which were established with the help of donations. As a result of these, Limerick Marine Search and Rescue are incredibly responsive in an emergency call due to their quick accessibility to the water.

Applicants will fill out an application form which they will return to [email protected] with ‘RECRUITMENT 2021’ in the subject line or they can post their form to Limerick Marine Search and Rescue, Atlas Avenue, Dock Road, Limerick.

All Applicants will be also be required to complete an interview.

The closing date for applications is Sunday, October 31, so if you’re interested make sure to apply.
